A Letter to the Citizens of Colorado from Gubernatorial Candidate Dr. Gregory A. Thomas

Dear Fellow Coloradans,

In 2021, my life and the lives of many others were forever altered by a Second-Degree Murder conviction. I recognize the gravity of that moment and the real consequences it had for families, friends, and communities. The loss and disruption caused are undeniable, and I carry the weight of that reality every day. I make no attempt to minimize what occurred, nor will I ever forget the impact it had.

I write to you now to be fully transparent, and I want to be clear: this is the only time I will publicly address this part of my past. My campaign is focused on healing, redemption, and service—not on revisiting old events. This moment is about truth, accountability, and demonstrating that even in the face of serious challenges, it is possible to transform one’s life in a way that benefits others.

During my time in the Colorado Department of Corrections, I have embraced every opportunity to learn, to grow, and to prepare to give back. Education, mentorship, reflection, and personal development have become the foundation for turning my experiences into something meaningful. I have sought to embody the Department’s mission: to hold individuals accountable while providing opportunities for positive change and successful reintegration. I believe deeply that people can emerge from difficult circumstances not as liabilities, but as contributors and assets to their communities.

This conviction changed the trajectory of my life, and I accepted the responsibility to use that experience as a catalyst for growth. It has shaped my commitment to public service and strengthened my belief that leadership is rooted in understanding, humility, and action. My candidacy for Governor is an extension of that commitment—focused on building safer communities, fostering opportunity, and ensuring that every Coloradan has the chance to thrive.

While the past cannot be undone, it can inform a better future. I dedicate myself to public service, not to erase history, but to honor the lessons it taught me by working tirelessly to make Colorado stronger, safer, and more united. This is the path of redemption I have chosen—a path rooted in accountability, reflection, and a steadfast commitment to meaningful action.

I share this with you once and only once because my focus is forward: on healing, on transformation, and on building a brighter future for all Coloradans. I ask for your understanding, your judgment, and your belief that even after profound challenges, a life dedicated to service can create positive change for our communities.

With humility, respect, and unwavering commitment,

Dr. Gregory A. Thomas
